Citizenship Requirements

Austrian Citizens and Equivalent Status, including:

EEA Citizens (incl. Swiss citizens): Treated the same as Austrian citizens for scholarship applications.

Third-Country Nationals, eligible if they:

– Have permanent residence in Austria (5 years of continuous lawful residence), or
– Are family members of Union citizens working in Austria or Austrian citizens.

Stateless Persons: Treated the same as third-country nationals.

Convention Refugees: Treated as Austrian citizens (proof required, e.g., refugee passport).

Eligibility Criteria

Study requirements: Applicants must be enrolled in a regular degree program at the University of Vienna and meet the study duration criteria, which include finishing the degree within the prescribed duration (plus one tolerance semester, if applicable).

ECTS: Students must complete a minimum of 40 ECTS credits during the academic year or finish their degree within this period.

Grade: The weighted grade average for all completed courses must not exceed 1.70 (rounded to two decimal places). Grades for final theses (diploma, master's, or doctoral) must be "Sehr gut" (excellent).

Application Process

Submission: Applications must be submitted electronically through the university’s u:space portal under Financial Matters --> Merit Scholarship.

Documents Required: Applicants need to submit proof of their academic performance.

Application Deadline: early October until early November of each academic year.

Selection Process: Scholarships are awarded based on the applicant's weighted grade average. If two or more applicants have the same average, the number of completed ECTS credits is used as a tie-breaker. Each field of study is allocated a specific percentage of the total scholarship fund.

Decision and Notification: Decisions will be communicated via u:space by January/February. 


Eligibility Criteria

Target group:
Master's students at the University of Vienna writing their thesis and requiring academic work abroad (e.g., field studies, lab work, or research in archives, libraries, etc.)

Duration of field trip:
2 weeks minimum and 3 months max 

Selection criteria:
– Necessity of a stay abroad in view of the degree course taken at the University of Vienna.
– Nature and aims of the proposed research visit abroad (detailed research proposal and timetable).
– Proof of the practicability of the planned activities abroad and preliminary work performed (see the relevant item under Application Documents)
– Very good academic achievements to date (duration and grades)
– Scientific qualification of the candidates

  • CV including a list of publications
  • Detailed description of the research project (please use this template and see also the checklist under Downloads):
  • Academic records to date: transcript of records (“Sammelzeugnis”) from the University of Vienna and certificates of study from other universities as appropriate
  • Proof of acceptance of the proposed subject and supervision of diploma/master/doctoral thesis (stamped and signed)
  • Written confirmation from the foreign institution or from the person responsible for supervision abroad concerning supervision and/or feasibility; if interviews need to be conducted, proof of consent from the proposed interviewees

Hard copy or e-mail:

  • Letter of recommendation from your academic supervisor at the University of Vienna. The letter of recommendation should be signed and e-mailed directly to kwa@univie.ac.at by the supervisor.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Eligible Applicants: Students in Austria working on a Master thesis with a feminist, queer, or anti-racist focus.
  • Research Focus: The thesis must present a clear feminist, queer, or anti-racist perspective and must not reproduce stereotypes or discriminatory narratives (e.g., colonialism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, othering, etc.).
  • Reflection Requirement: Applicants must critically reflect on their own position and privileges in relation to the project.
  • Funding Limit: Up to €1,500 for a Master thesis. Applicants must disclose any prior funding from this budget and any other external funding sources.
  • Timeframe: Projects can be funded up to six months after completion.

Application Process

  • Application Period: December 1, 2024, to January 5, 2025. The final deadline is January 5, 2025.
  • Required Documents:
    • Application Form (available on the ÖH website)
    • Research Proposal: Including title, form of work, estimated size, topic context, work methods, aim, and literature.
    • Statement on Queer/Feminist Standpoint: Explanation of the feminist/queer perspective in the thesis.
    • Short CV (without a photo) including educational background and social position.
    • Statement of Costs: Including detailed cost breakdown, requested financial support, and reasons for ÖH support.
    • Publication Plans (if applicable): Indicate if publication on the ÖH website is desired.
